The 2026 Men’s World Cup promises to be the most global tournament yet with an expanded field of 48 teams. Sure, that’s mostly a money grab for FIFA, but four (🇨🇻 🇺🇿 🇨🇼 🇯🇴) are making their debut on this world stage, offering them a powerful chance to represent their culture and inspire their home fans.

This year it is co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, but money is the central storyline. Dynamic pricing, transit costs, visa bonds, broadcast permits, security payments — the slow trickle of outrage has turned into a deluge across topics. FIFA is broadly hated by fans as a profit-hoarding .

This should come as little surprise. The build-up saw FIFA president Infantino cozy up to U.S. President Trumps corrupt ways by awarding him a farcically invented “FIFA Peace Prize”.

Despite all this money-grubbing and corruption, people are finding ways to come together so FIFA doesn’t ruin the party! Cities are hosting (mostly) free sanctioned “fan fests” where they’ll stream games, have events, food and more.

For immigrant communities in the U.S, supporting their home or adopted countries can be a celebration of resilience and representation. This especially matters in times when so many are threatened by growing discrimination, ICE, and other risks.
